One only needs to watch an Indian Premier League (IPL) game in normal times to see the passion of sports fans in India, but Yannick Colaco, the co-founder of streaming service FanCode, believes that community is underserved. Colaco was speaking on the opening day of the SportsPro Asia 2020 virtual summit which began on Wednesday (21 October).
Launched in April 2019 by Dream Sports, the parent company of the Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsor Dream11 which recently raised US$225 million, FanCode is steadily building a portfolio of streaming rights that includes German soccer’s Bundesliga, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Built on the belief that Indian consumers have limited access to global sports, and that the fan experience is fragmented, Colaco said FanCode is aiming to provide one destination for people in India to watch live content, talk to friends about that content, and enjoy coverage of their favourite competitions in between.
“All of this experience is something that’s curated uniquely for that sports fan,” he said, “and that’s really the genesis of how and why we started FanCode, because we saw there was an opportunity to serve a relatively underserved sports fan and bring this unified experience to them on a singular platform.”
