PDC T10 league was promoted as the comeback event for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and some of its top cricketers. Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekera, Chamara Kapugedera, Chamara Silva, Schitra Senanayake, Dhammika Prasad and Asela Gunaratne were all named to take part in the event.
India’s fantasy & Live Streaming platform Sports Tiger was also said to be lined up to do the live telecast. But after SLC’s intervention, the entire event has been scrapped without anyone having any idea who were the people behind the announcements and the tournament.
The announcement took SLC by surprise. The event has been cancelled with the cricket series deemed to be the work of some ‘outside party’. According to SLC, none of the Sri Lanka cricket stakeholders, players, state or any district body was involved in the tournament.
According to SLC, after clarifications from the board the organizers abandoned the tournament. The tournament that was to be run bordering the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was to be the franchise property of an unnamed “outside party” and to take place between June 25 and July 6.
The players named in the line-ups have declared to SLC that they were unaware of any tournament.
“We did not sanction this tournament and have already conveyed it to the International Cricket Council (ICC), our stakeholders and the clubs as well as the players. As far as we know it was to be handled by a complete outsider that is not part of the set-up,” said Sri Lanka Cricket Chief Executive Officer Ashley de Silva has given the clarification.
SLC has also declared that they are confident they can unveil the board’s franchise led tournament, Lankan Premier League (LPL) in August. According to the SLC CEO, the response to the LPL tender has been very encouraging and they should successfully launch the event in August.
“We have called for media and marketing rights and there has been a very good and positive response,” said De Silva.
Sri Lanka cricket’s national team is currently under training and soon the top cricketers will be seen in action as the first-class cricket in Sri Lanka is scheduled to restart next month.
